When couples plan their outdoor engagement photos in Italy, one of the first things they ask me (after where the best spots are on the Amalfi Coast) is: What should we pack?
As a local engagement and wedding photographer based right here on the Amalfi Coast, I’ve photographed countless couples against these sun-drenched cliffs and pastel villages. I know firsthand that packing the right essentials not only helps you feel comfortable but also makes your photos look polished, effortless, and truly “you.”
Here’s my go-to Amalfi Coast packing checklist to make sure you’re ready for your shoot — from practical items you’ll thank yourself for bringing, to small details that add an extra personal touch.

Why Packing Matters for Your Italy Engagement Photos
The Amalfi Coast is gorgeous, but it’s also full of steep steps, uneven cobblestones, and bright Mediterranean sun. If you show up unprepared, you might feel flustered — and that can show in your photos. Packing smart helps you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to focus on each other (instead of wishing you’d worn different shoes or remembered sunscreen).
Think of it this way: the more comfortable and prepared you are, the more natural and candid your outdoor engagement photos will feel!

1. Outfits That Work with the Setting
Bring two outfits — one dressy and one more casual. A flowing dress or linen suit photographs beautifully in the golden light of Positano or Ravello, while a relaxed outfit (think breezy sundress, tailored pants, or chic jumpsuit) is perfect for strolling through town.
Pro tip: neutrals, earthy tones, or soft pastels complement the coastal palette and keep the focus on your connection. If you’re unsure, think about what will feel timeless 10 years from now when you look back at your engagement photos.

2. Comfortable but Stylish Shoes
The Amalfi Coast is stunning… and also full of steps. If you’re planning your Italy engagement photos here, pack a pair of comfortable but stylish shoes. Wedges or block heels work better than stilettos, and chic sandals or loafers are great for walking between locations.
You can always switch into dressier shoes once we’re at the actual photo spot — I often recommend bringing a small tote just for shoe swaps.

3. Sunscreen and Touch-Up Makeup
The Mediterranean sun is beautiful but strong, especially in summer. A small bottle of sunscreen and a compact touch-up kit (powder, lip color, blotting papers) will help you stay fresh throughout the shoot. Shiny skin or sunburn isn’t exactly the vibe you want for your engagement album.

4. Stay Hydrated and Energized
It sounds simple, but water and a quick snack are lifesavers, especially if we’re shooting in the summer heat. A bottle of sparkling water or a local lemon soda not only keeps you refreshed but can also make for a fun candid shot together!

5. A Touch of Personality
Some couples love to keep it simple; others like to bring a little something extra. If you want, pack a prop that reflects your personalities are welcomed! Maybe a bottle of Prosecco to pop on the beach, or even renting vintage Car or Vespa rental for those iconic Amalfi Coast shots. The goal isn’t to stage things, but to highlight what makes your story unique!

6. Small Details with Big Impact
This one is often overlooked, but it makes a big difference. Consider bringing along personal details that can tie your photos back to your love story or even your wedding day:
- A handwritten love note to read during the shoot
- A keepsake that reflects your relationship (like a book, vintage camera, or travel token)
- Engagement details like a wedding invitation mockup or ring box, which can be photographed as flat-lays and used later for your wedding stationery or wedding website
These little touches add personality and give your gallery variety beyond portraits.

Quick Outdoor Engagement Shoot Checklist
Here’s a quick recap you can screenshot before packing:
- Two outfits (one dressy, one casual)
- Comfortable but stylish shoes
- Sunscreen + touch-up makeup kit
- Water + small snack
- Optional props (Prosecco, flowers, Vespa, etc.)
- Bonus personal details (ring box, note, invitation mockup, keepsakes)
